Annabelle’s First Birthday

Our sweet little Annabelle turned 1 in August and we were so excited to celebrate with our friends and family!!  Picking a date for a summer time birthday party is a little tricky with a big family but we found a date that worked and decorated for a little get together at the house.  I loved how all the little party pieces came together and definitely learned a few tricks to make things a little easier.

Decor

I did a little pre-planning and put together some fun little pieces to make AB’s day special.

Annabelle's First Birthday

I finally printed some of AB’s monthly pictures and hung them on the fireplace as a little banner!  Crazy to see how big she is compared to the littl 6 lb 5 oz baby we fell in love with!

Annabelle's First Birthday

I also put up the birthday banner I made a few years back when we celebrated Brandon’s birthday the first year we moved in the house and it is now our little family tradition to hang it for each of our birthdays.  *I used small command hooks that we leave up all year to hang the other banners I have for different holidays. They are so tiny and clear against the window frame you don’t notice them.

Annabelle's First Birthday

The table we used for birthday desserts was the same cake cart we used for our wedding.  I grabbed some table runners to cover the cart (which is normally used in our garage as a potting table) and laid out the desserts.  We did little homemade mini cakes for AB and also my two brothers whose birthdays were so close to hers. I find it easier to do cupcakes for everyone else; there is no need to worry about cake cutting and it makes it easy for guests to take a treat home.

Annabelle's First Birthday

I made these little floral hoops to hang in the kitchen to bring the party “theme” in to this space.  I loved how this DIY turned out but I do have to say I would love it if someone can help me find a way to keep them from spinning all around on the twine (without gluing them directly to the window)!  I plan to find a way to hang these up in AB’s room now.

Annabelle's First Birthday

My favorite party decoration was the floral hoop we hung over the dessert table.  I have wanted to do a name wrath piece for AB’s room since she was born. Annabelle Elizabeth is named after both of my grandmothers (Annabelle is my mom’s mother and Elizabeth is my dad’s mother).  They both have passed away but I wanted to honor their memories.  I was able to get copies of each of their signatures and place them on the ribbon. I used a scanner, photoshop and my silhouette machine for this DIY, and it ended up being a lot easier than I had expected.  I laugh because people who see it comment on how similar their signatures are… I guess that’s Pennsylvania Catholic School cursive for you! It hangs over AB’s bed now and I absolutely love it.

Food

As our guest list for the party started to grow I know I wanted to keep the menu simple so that I could mingle with everyone and not spend the entire party in the kitchen.  I scoured pinterest for easy meals but ended up taking the advice of a friend and let someone else do the heavy lifting! We ordered the party food from Walmart. We still kept it simple and went with chicken and finger sandwiches with fruit and veggie platter sides but picking up the food made everything easy.  Now I did grab the fruit, veggies, and cheeses from BJs and prepped them the night before but that was simple chopping! The day of the party I had Brandon run out to the store and grab our order.

I did bake the little mini cakes for AB and my brothers, but that was with a super cute little tiered cake pan I snagged off Amazon.  I added the cupcakes to the walmart order and they turned out way better than i could have attempted (i mean… look at my icing skill on those mini cakes! ha).

The price wasn’t too bad and how simple it kept prepping was worth it!  If you have a big group get together coming up I recommend checking the local grocery store for their platter prices.

Annabelle's First Birthday

All in all in was a wonderful day and her party was the perfect way to celebrate our favorite little girl!

Toddler Food Helpers

Each stage with a baby seems to get easier and harder at the same time!  Now that AB is one, she is eating regular table food and drinking from sippy cups and while that means no pumps, formula, bottles and puree to lug around, feeding a toddler comes with its own learning curve.  There have been a few gadgets along the way that have made meal times a little easier around our house!

Suction Plate

Picking out what AB is going to eat every night has been a trial and error process. And while there really hasn’t been anything she refuses to eat, she definitely has let us know her favorites (carrots and peas are a big hit!).  So most nights I like to start with what we are planning to eat for the night and maybe change out an item or two if it’s not quite right for her. Say if we are having spaghetti and salad, she may get plain spaghetti noodles, meatballs and peas instead of salad.  And now that she is eating little meals instead of purees I wanted her to have her own little plate for the table. This adorable little divided plate is perfect to keep all her random foods seperated and the suction is a lifesaver; many a meals that would have ended up entirely on the floor have been saved thanks to that little suction pad!

Squeeze Pouch Toppers

AB is a big fan of her squeeze pouches with fruit and veggies and I am a big fan for their convenience.  These are perfect to stash in AB’s bag for when we are out and about and sitting down to eat a snack isn’t convenient.  My only downside to the pouches were that I still needed to help AB with them so that she wouldn’t squeeze all the contents out at once, and even at her little age, she is already pretty in to doing things herself.  Then my friend told me about these squeeze pouch toppers that have been a game changer. They pop right on to a squeeze pouch and act as a stopper from a squeeze mess! The child just needs to suck on them to get the ingredients out.  And the ones I found on amazon even come with a little carry case so they wouldn’t be lost in the bottom of a giant diaper bag. AB loves these things so much and it has given me a an extra hand during a quick snack break on the go!

Toddler Meal Helpers

A New Use for Bakeware

While it is easier to have a toddler that can eat regular table food (compared to an infant that needs purees), I still find myself taking the time to prep little meals to go for AB when we are headed out of the house.  I always so like to be prepared. For packing up those little meals on the go, I have found using silicone cupcake liners to be the perfect trick. I started using these for my own little snack containers and find they are the perfect size for meals for AB.  I will take a larger tupperware container and use the baking cups to divide up the container. Then I can fit one little toddler approved meal in a handy container and step out of the house!

Kitchen Scissors

I learned about this meal time tip one day while I was dropping off at daycare one morning.  Her sweet teacher was prepping the breakfast for the little ones and she wiped out a pair of scissors to cut up their pancakes… genius!  She said it was much easier (and faster) than using a knife and fork to cut them all up.  And oh man, was she right!   I definitely find cutting up a peanut butter sandwich in to bite size pieces with scissors is so much simpler and less messy than trying to using a knife.   So now at our house we have a pair of dedicated ‘kitchen scissors’ that we use to cut up AB’s meals.

I would love to hear what works for everyone else!  Any tips and tricks you have for making life with a toddler simplified?

Fall Decor

After our recent trip to the pumpkin patch I have definitely been in the mood to add a few little decorations around our house for fall.  Our house is still very much a work in progress in terms of design and style so the seasonal decor pieces are usually kept to a minimum at our house.  But even just the few subtle pieces, and a perfect smelling candle, can really freshen up the house for the new season.Fall Home Decor

Little bit’s of AB’s books have creeped in to the house decor, haha.  I leave them turned around to try to try to help them blend in.

What are your favorite ways to decorate for fall?

DIY Toddler Deer Halloween Costume

Toddler Deer DIY Halloween Costume

Last year AB was only 2 months old at Halloween so we didn’t really make a big deal about the holiday with her.  I did snag an adorable lobster costume from my sister so she could at least say she dressed up!

But this year, I am more excited to celebrate with her and make an adorable costume!  While she is still too little for trick-or-treating, we are going to a friend’s house Halloween night and AB even has a party at her “little school” where she gets to dress in costume!

Annabelle the Deer

Toddler Deer DIY Halloween Costume

After deciding on the deer design and look for her costume, putting it together was fairly simple and I got it done during two afternoon naps.  Haha, this is how I reference time now… so for a regular person, it was about 3 hours. (If you have done a similar design or worked on a headband piece before, this may be quicker for you!)

Bodysuit

For the body suit I was able to find a brown one on amazon, where I also purchased her thigh high stockings.  I took leftover fur fabric I had used in a past project, traced the bodice size from the body suit and cut the fur to fit.  I then sewed it to the body suit (hot glue would work too to make this a no-sew DIY). I then used a chalk paint pen to draw small spots on the ‘butt’ of the body suit.  Now learn from my mistakes and be sure to put a piece of cardboard between the front and back of the body suit or the chalk paint pen will bleed right through… thankfully it washed off but there was a slight panic attack and having to scrub off the paint probably added a lot more time than necessary to this DIY.

Headband

Felt | Similar Headband

For the head band I was able to snag a $1 toddler head band at the local dollar general.  It did have flowers glued on but i was able to mostly cut them off (and you will cover the band, so it doesn’t have to bee perfect).  I also got felt sheets from Michaels in brown, light brown, beige and green.

After removing the attached flowers, I cut a thin strip of light brown felt (about 1 ½ inch thick) and wrapped that around the head band.  I used two strips, starting each one from the bottom of the band. The 2 pieces didn’t meet in the middle but that is covered up by flowers so it was not an issue.  I then free handed ears and antlers. You will need just two ears, but 2 “sets” of antlers that match up. I cut the two “sets” and glued a piece of pipe cleaner between each set to give the antler a little structure.  I would also recommend letting the pipe cleaner piece come out of the bottom so you can wrap it tightly around the head band. I used brown string to stitch around the felt antlers for a little definition. I then wrapped the antlers on and glued on ears.  I then followed the super simple tutorial from The Ribbon Retreat Blog to make the felt flowers to cover up where I attached the ears and antlers! I ended up coming across some small pearl beads and added those to my flowers, but that is a step you can definitely leave off if you don’t have any on hand!

But that was it!  The headband cost around $3 in materials to make!  (And maybe one day I’ll do a more detailed post, but this first time was a bit of learning as I went!)

Finishing Touches

Lastly I added some brown shoes that were already in AB’s closet and finished her outfit!

This one was a fun one to make and I was so excited with how it turned out.

PS – I have already snagged some thicker stockings just in case Halloween night is a little chilly and the thigh highs won’t keep her warm enough!  You really never know around here!

Fall Pumpkin Patch

Fall Pumpkin Patch Adventures

Fall Pumpkin Patch Adventures

At the end of September we did a little family trip to the sweetest little pumpkin patch! I miss when we lived in Christiansburg where the pumpkin patch farms would take you on a hayride through the rolling hills to acres of pumpkins as far as the eye can see (and even included fall appropriate weather!).  But I scoured the web for a local patch with at least a hayride to enjoy and found one near the North Carolina border. Now there were no rolling hills but AB did get her first hayride out to a quaint little field of pumpkins.

And while we were there, AB got up close and personal with the chickens and ducks at the petting zoo!

It was a sweet little memory and a trip I hope we can do each year.

Now to convince my husband that AB would LOVE a trip to the Christmas Tree farm in December!

Dressing Room Try On – Target

I had a few errands to run and scored some time all by myself at Target (who knew a hour alone could be so enjoyable!).  I had seen a few outfits online that I wanted to try on so I headed to the dressing room and thought I would share some pics to show the fit and style of what I found.

Dresses

Dressing Room May 2 2018

This shift dress is an easy throw on (no zippers or buttons) but with that style lacks a fitted look.  The length is nice but for my taste, without the fitted look, the length leaves this dressing looking a bit burlap sack-y on me.  The bottom hem is higher on the sides than the back and front.  The dress is well made, and the material is thick (yet still breathable) so no liner is needed.  This could work as a great dress to throw on for a day at the beach where you would be bouncing between shops, restaurants and the sand.

Dressing Room May 2 2018

The embroidery and sleeves drew me to this dress and while the style is adorable it was too short for me.  The material is thin (black underwaer may have been the wrong choice for a try on session…oops) so without a slip, even nude undergarments may not show.  While I loved the dress’ details it was a bit too short and thin for me.

Dressing Room May 2 2018

The look of this dress is so perfect for summer.  The material is thin, but, as you can see there is a lining which keeps it from being see through.  The material does hang so a pair of spanks with a strapless bra may be your best choice. The embroidery is so sweetly detailed and the top is stitched to keep the neckline modest. The white would be a great for a bride on a beach-y bachelorette trip!  It also comes in a navy blue.  I would say it runs true to size (they only had a medium in store, so I would order this in a small, my normal size).

Dressing Room May 2 2018

Love this black bo-ho dress!  First, it has pockets!!  The straps are thicker, leaving you the option to wear a regular bra.  The length hits a bit above the knee and because of the length and loose fit I ended up purchasing this in a x-small (I am in a small on this try on).  The tassels are cute, but I may opt to cutting them off to leave a simpler neck line. Can’t wait to wear this one!

(Definitely not the most nursing friendly dress, but I think I can make it work to have such a great easy dress option!)

Here are a few more dress picks they didn’t have in store:

Tops

Dressing Room May 2 2018

I am in love with this top!  Obviously embroidery is a current trend and this top looks so sweet with the detail.  The loose fit with the lightweight fabric make this a great choice for summer.

Dressing Room May 2 2018

The ruffled sleeves adds a little flair to this striped tee.  The material is thick (wearing a black bra here that is not showing).  The shirt is short and, on me, would have not have meet the pant line on mid-rise pants.  The back is longer so the look with these high rise shorts works.

Dressing Room May 2 2018

Not the best picture, but I couldn’t leave out this light-weight jacket.  It is super light and would work perfect for the light afternoon rain storms we seem to get here in the summer.  It has a longer tail and the sides cinch for a fitted look.  With pockets and a hood, this has a new home in my coat closet!

Here are a few more top picks they didn’t have in store:

Shorts

Dressing Room May 2 2018

I am usually not a fan of shorts, mainly because I think they look too short on my long legs, but with the temps already hitting 90+ this weekend (we apparently skipped spring all together) I feel like it’s going to be a hot summer and I may need to add a pair or two to my wardrobe.  These high-rise chambray shorts had such a great fit.  They come in a 3″ in seam.  The rise was perfect on the post-baby body and the fit makes them easy to wear running around town with a baby in tow.

Here are a few more shorts picks they didn’t have in store:

What styles have you seen lately at Target that you are adding to your wardrobe this summer?

Weekend Ruminations

After a few crazy weekends we finally had a time this past weekend to spend at home.  We went to a pig roast, caught up on some spring cleaning and spent some time with Brandon’s family.  Now that were back to Monday, I wanted to pop in and share a few things I am loving lately.

Baby Besties – Last weekend we got away to Alexandria to catch up with some of my college friends!  We spent the weekend surrounded by babies. And I must say, weekends with babies look way different than our college days… and nights.

New High Chair – I was able to convince Brandon to make a pit stop at Ikea last weekend on our way home from Alexandria and grabbed a new high chair for AB.  We have a convertible chair that I highly recommend, but wanted something that could grow a bit more with her and would also free up a chair in the kitchen. Plus, this one breaks down for us to travel with.

Ikea High Chair

Spring Weather – I don’t want to jinx it but I think we are headed for more sun than snow in the forecast and I could not be more excited.  It is a graveyard of dead plants and hanging baskets on our porch and I am ready for some nice weather to get the motivation to head outside and spruce it up.  I also can’t wait to add this new furniture to the deck and really enjoy some summer nights with friends out back!

Bathing Suits – Now I wouldn’t say I am loving bathing suit shopping, but I do love when I find a good one I like.  And bathing suit time means it’s getting closer to beach time, so I am loving that! I have scored a few great recent finds!

Starbucks Pink Drink – Apparently I have been under a rock, but I just tried the “Pink Drink” at Starbucks and it is delicious!!  Now the description, a strawberry acai refresher with coconut milk, sounded a bit… revoluting (milk and tea just did not sound good to me) but I am so glad I gave it a chance.  Hoping to hop into a Trader Joes soon to grab some ingrdients and try to make my own at home.Starbucks Pink Drink

Packed in my Pump Bag

What's in my Pump Bag

Bags | Pump | Storage Bags | Coconut Oil | Pumping Bra | Nursing Cover | Burp Rag

Last week I talked about the amazing baby/everyday bag I use daily that I am able to toss my “pump bag” in and wanted to share what I stash in said pump bag!

I use two of the wet/dry bags that comes in the set from amazon.  One to tote all my “supplies” in and one to use for the pump pieces that I stash in the fridge between pumping sessions.  (Best information I found was that pump pieces that contact liquid can be put in the fridge between pumping sessions and just washed at the end of the day.)

I have used both the Medela Freestyle and Pump In Style and have been happy with both but find that the Freestyle is definitely the easiest for on the go with it’s rechargeable battery and light weight.

The large wet/dry bag has plenty of room for my other go-to supplies.  I keep storage bags (with a marker tucked in the bag for labeling) to store my daily supply.  Coconut oil was recommended to me buy a friend instead of lanolin oil and while at home I have a large Trader Joes container, I grabbed a smaller on the go container to keep in my bag.  Head phones are a must for those nursing room sessions so I can catch up on my Netflix shows.  I purchased the hands free pumping bra when I was pumping in the car, but it is also great to have for convince for double pumping.  This adorable nursing cover is perfect for sharing time in the pump room with other mom co-workers. And of course it never hurts to throw a burp rag in to have on hand!

What items do you tote around for pumping?

What's in my Pump Bag

** PS – I also learned the hard way it is a great idea to keep a manual pump in the car for those times you get all the way to work or far from the house and realize you have forgotten one pump piece (or the whole thing).  This has definitely come in handy!!

AB’s Nursery Reveal

It’s time to share one of my favorite rooms in the house!

When I was pregnant I went in to full on nesting mode and spent a lot of time making AB’s nursery just how I wanted.  It is one of my favorite rooms in the house and I love how our plans turned out.

We started by painting the walls a perfect neutral gray shade (Sherwin Williams-Gray Screen) and added white furniture so that we could easily change the style as the room grows with AB.   We decided against a ‘theme’ for the nursery and decided to follow more of a color scheme.  Pink, white and gray were the colors used throughout the space.

Brandon painted the walls and had his first experience putting together Ikea furniture while I painted and hung the shelves and book racks. My mom was a huge help with the curtains when we couldn’t find what we wanted in the right length.  She was able to add length by sewing an additional panel to the bottom of the room darkening curtains we found at Target.

With the large windows and a double door closet, I knew we were limited on wall space so we used the spice racks from Ikea and used them ask book racks.  I have a few additional racks we can add later as AB’s book collection continues to grow.

The glider is so comfortable and I love the ottoman for extra storage for thicker blankets.  I see more toy bins being added to under her crib as AB’s toy collection grows.

We are so happy with how her room turned out and it is a place really enjoy hanging out in.

I can’t wait for this space to grow with her.

Mom Bag for Pumping Moms

Whats-in-My-Bag_Diaper-BagBag | Dr. Smith’s On-The-Go Diaper Cream Spray | Johnson & Johnson Face Wipes | Oxo Wipe Container | Fisher Price Coffee Cup | Wallet (similar) | Notebook | Pop Socket

For baby AB we do a little nursing, a little formula and a little pumping (and thank heavens her little stomach will take whatever we give it… ha).  So while on maternity leave when AB and I would head out the door I would tote along her diaper bag, my wallet, my pump bag and a cooler bag.  We live in a rural area so when we would go out it would usually be for a good chunk of time, so I found I usually did need everything I was carting along but man was it a bear.  When I went back to the office, I would leave each day with my work bag, lunch bag, pump bag and, if AB was going to the sitters, her diaper bag.

Then a coworker showed me her new “diaper” bag and I was obsessed!  It is definitely much more than a diaper bag and I snagged one for myself.   To be honest, I have always been a big bag person (Brandon use to loving refer to my purse as my “carry-on”) so there was no surprise when I loved it.

Diaper Bag

It’s the Skip Hop Grand Central Take-It-All Diaper Bag!  This thing holds it all!  It is my week day go-to and also perfect for outings with the family.  During the week, I use the large middle compartment to stash all my pump stuff (which I keep in these wet/dry bags) and on one side is my stuff (like my wallet, phone, sun glasses, little notebook) and the other, a few things for AB (small toy, diapers, wipes, formula).  I keep her side stocked so if we run some errands after work I still just need my one bag.  On the weekend when we are headed out I still have my wet/dry bags for my pump stuff, but can leave that in the car and lighten the bag up a bit.  I also use the middle compartment for days out of the house with the baby to stash some extras (burp rags, change of clothes and maybe a few more toys).

I snagged these wet/dry bags off amazon and for now I use the large bag for my pump supplies and the middle size for my pump parts so I can stash them in the fridge between pumps.   This has been a nice upgrade from the poor Ziploc I was washing out each night after work.   The small one is perfect to throw in my bag incase AB gets an outfit dirty or there is nowhere to throw away a diaper (#thereispeeinmypurse #momlife).  And these ones have held up great and I can see using them down the road for wet swimsuits after the beach or vacation hamper bags for little ones!

I may look like I am ready to move in any where I go, but I love this Mary Poppins-esque bag!  And to be honest, it would probably be a great weekender bag for those without a little one in tow.  There is no shame in rocking a baby bag sans baby.  I actually used one before I had Annabelle because I loved all the pockets.  What is your go to bag?
