Toddler Food Helpers

Each stage with a baby seems to get easier and harder at the same time!  Now that AB is one, she is eating regular table food and drinking from sippy cups and while that means no pumps, formula, bottles and puree to lug around, feeding a toddler comes with its own learning curve.  There have been a few gadgets along the way that have made meal times a little easier around our house!

Suction Plate

Picking out what AB is going to eat every night has been a trial and error process. And while there really hasn’t been anything she refuses to eat, she definitely has let us know her favorites (carrots and peas are a big hit!).  So most nights I like to start with what we are planning to eat for the night and maybe change out an item or two if it’s not quite right for her. Say if we are having spaghetti and salad, she may get plain spaghetti noodles, meatballs and peas instead of salad.  And now that she is eating little meals instead of purees I wanted her to have her own little plate for the table. This adorable little divided plate is perfect to keep all her random foods seperated and the suction is a lifesaver; many a meals that would have ended up entirely on the floor have been saved thanks to that little suction pad!

Squeeze Pouch Toppers

AB is a big fan of her squeeze pouches with fruit and veggies and I am a big fan for their convenience.  These are perfect to stash in AB’s bag for when we are out and about and sitting down to eat a snack isn’t convenient.  My only downside to the pouches were that I still needed to help AB with them so that she wouldn’t squeeze all the contents out at once, and even at her little age, she is already pretty in to doing things herself.  Then my friend told me about these squeeze pouch toppers that have been a game changer. They pop right on to a squeeze pouch and act as a stopper from a squeeze mess! The child just needs to suck on them to get the ingredients out.  And the ones I found on amazon even come with a little carry case so they wouldn’t be lost in the bottom of a giant diaper bag. AB loves these things so much and it has given me a an extra hand during a quick snack break on the go!

A New Use for Bakeware

While it is easier to have a toddler that can eat regular table food (compared to an infant that needs purees), I still find myself taking the time to prep little meals to go for AB when we are headed out of the house.  I always so like to be prepared. For packing up those little meals on the go, I have found using silicone cupcake liners to be the perfect trick. I started using these for my own little snack containers and find they are the perfect size for meals for AB.  I will take a larger tupperware container and use the baking cups to divide up the container. Then I can fit one little toddler approved meal in a handy container and step out of the house!

Kitchen Scissors

I learned about this meal time tip one day while I was dropping off at daycare one morning.  Her sweet teacher was prepping the breakfast for the little ones and she wiped out a pair of scissors to cut up their pancakes… genius!  She said it was much easier (and faster) than using a knife and fork to cut them all up.  And oh man, was she right!   I definitely find cutting up a peanut butter sandwich in to bite size pieces with scissors is so much simpler and less messy than trying to using a knife.   So now at our house we have a pair of dedicated ‘kitchen scissors’ that we use to cut up AB’s meals.

I would love to hear what works for everyone else!  Any tips and tricks you have for making life with a toddler simplified?

Fall Decor

After our recent trip to the pumpkin patch I have definitely been in the mood to add a few little decorations around our house for fall.  Our house is still very much a work in progress in terms of design and style so the seasonal decor pieces are usually kept to a minimum at our house.  But even just the few subtle pieces, and a perfect smelling candle, can really freshen up the house for the new season.Fall Home Decor

Little bit’s of AB’s books have creeped in to the house decor, haha.  I leave them turned around to try to try to help them blend in.

What are your favorite ways to decorate for fall?

Last year AB was only 2 months old at Halloween so we didn’t really make a big deal about the holiday with her.  I did snag an adorable lobster costume from my sister so she could at least say she dressed up!

But this year, I am more excited to celebrate with her and make an adorable costume!  While she is still too little for trick-or-treating, we are going to a friend’s house Halloween night and AB even has a party at her “little school” where she gets to dress in costume!

After deciding on the deer design and look for her costume, putting it together was fairly simple and I got it done during two afternoon naps.  Haha, this is how I reference time now… so for a regular person, it was about 3 hours. (If you have done a similar design or worked on a headband piece before, this may be quicker for you!)

Bodysuit

For the body suit I was able to find a brown one on amazon, where I also purchased her thigh high stockings.  I took leftover fur fabric I had used in a past project, traced the bodice size from the body suit and cut the fur to fit.  I then sewed it to the body suit (hot glue would work too to make this a no-sew DIY). I then used a chalk paint pen to draw small spots on the ‘butt’ of the body suit.  Now learn from my mistakes and be sure to put a piece of cardboard between the front and back of the body suit or the chalk paint pen will bleed right through… thankfully it washed off but there was a slight panic attack and having to scrub off the paint probably added a lot more time than necessary to this DIY.

Headband

Felt | Similar Headband

For the head band I was able to snag a $1 toddler head band at the local dollar general.  It did have flowers glued on but i was able to mostly cut them off (and you will cover the band, so it doesn’t have to bee perfect).  I also got felt sheets from Michaels in brown, light brown, beige and green.

After removing the attached flowers, I cut a thin strip of light brown felt (about 1 ½ inch thick) and wrapped that around the head band.  I used two strips, starting each one from the bottom of the band. The 2 pieces didn’t meet in the middle but that is covered up by flowers so it was not an issue.  I then free handed ears and antlers. You will need just two ears, but 2 “sets” of antlers that match up. I cut the two “sets” and glued a piece of pipe cleaner between each set to give the antler a little structure.  I would also recommend letting the pipe cleaner piece come out of the bottom so you can wrap it tightly around the head band. I used brown string to stitch around the felt antlers for a little definition. I then wrapped the antlers on and glued on ears.  I then followed the super simple tutorial from The Ribbon Retreat Blog to make the felt flowers to cover up where I attached the ears and antlers! I ended up coming across some small pearl beads and added those to my flowers, but that is a step you can definitely leave off if you don’t have any on hand!

But that was it!  The headband cost around $3 in materials to make!  (And maybe one day I’ll do a more detailed post, but this first time was a bit of learning as I went!)

Finishing Touches

Lastly I added some brown shoes that were already in AB’s closet and finished her outfit!

This one was a fun one to make and I was so excited with how it turned out.

PS – I have already snagged some thicker stockings just in case Halloween night is a little chilly and the thigh highs won’t keep her warm enough!  You really never know around here!

Fall Pumpkin Patch

Fall Pumpkin Patch Adventures

Fall Pumpkin Patch Adventures

At the end of September we did a little family trip to the sweetest little pumpkin patch! I miss when we lived in Christiansburg where the pumpkin patch farms would take you on a hayride through the rolling hills to acres of pumpkins as far as the eye can see (and even included fall appropriate weather!).  But I scoured the web for a local patch with at least a hayride to enjoy and found one near the North Carolina border. Now there were no rolling hills but AB did get her first hayride out to a quaint little field of pumpkins.

And while we were there, AB got up close and personal with the chickens and ducks at the petting zoo!

It was a sweet little memory and a trip I hope we can do each year.

Now to convince my husband that AB would LOVE a trip to the Christmas Tree farm in December!

*If you are a local the farm we visited was Greenbrier Farms Nursery in Chesapeake, VA and we highly recommend it!
